- 10-15 finalists will read at the Beehive

CALL FOR DESIGNS: AIAS T-SHIRT DESIGN COMPETITION

The AIAS is hosting a T-Shirt Design Competition for all students in Architectural Studies, History of Art & Architecture, and Studio Arts. A selection will be chosen by vote to be produced and sold by the AIAS Chapter at Pitt.

The winning selection will win $20 and a free shirt of their design!

All designs due by December 5, 2008 via email to tshirt@aiaspitt.com

Designs must follow the following guidelines:
May include any combination of graphics and text
May only apply to one side of the t-shirt
May not exceed two colors
Submissions must include a copy of the design as well as a rendering of the design on a t-shirt template (attached)
Limit one per student

We're back with the much anticipated return of Trista Baldwin's Chicks with Dicks: Bad Girls On Bikes Doing Bad Things, a 60's B-movie parody with a twist. Chicks is set in and around Three Mile Island, Pennsylvania's very own nuclear power plant. The irreverently absurd plot centers around Vespa de Amore, a prom queen runner-up who accidentally kills her sex-shy boyfriend and ends up on the road with an all-girl biker gang named Satan's Cherries. This wild ride features plenty of go-go dancing, hair pulling, mud wrestling, and kung fu fighting as these good-girls-gone-bad get even worse!

This time we present it in full blooded Bricolage style. Popcorn, Cotton Candy, Beer, Live Music, T-shirts and Panties!!

Barbara Weissberger and Bovey Lee (featured in issues 1 and 2, respectively, of The Original, are two of the artists whose work is included in the Pittsburgh Biennial, running until August 24^th, 2008. The Biennial, hosted by Pittsburgh Filmmakers and Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, displays the visual art of more than 30 local artists. BRENDAN KERR: Brendan Kerr comes to Pittsburgh via Elkins, West Virginia
and Brooklyn, New York. He recently completed his MFA at the University of
Pittsburgh and his novel, The Uses of Talent, is currently looking for a
home. Brendan plays bass with the rock band Workshop. He lives in Polish
Hill and can often be found among the crowd in one local establishment or
another.

RENEE ALBERTS: Renee Alberts listens to rivers, talks to the radio, and
translates the conversations into poetry, sound and collage. She learned
all this in Pittsburgh, where she participates in and curates many events
with some mighty fine wordsmiths and musicians. Her chapbook is
forthcoming from Speed & Briscoe.

THE PLAT MAPS: Kurt Garrison with Megan Williams. He yelled and played
guitar. She sang and played violin. Others joined in on the madness.
Alcohol was often (if not always) involved. Fun was had by all.

Meet cartoonist Morrie Turner, creator of Wee Pals, the first integrated syndicated cartoon. Morrie will take part in a panel discussion on African-Americans in cartoons at 3:00 pm. Other panel guests include Robb Armstrong (creator of the comic Jump Start) and Don Peoples, former editorial cartoonist. There will be cartoon demonstrations, workshops and autograph signing. Feraba - a Pan African fashion and art party, 5:30 - 8 pm

Thanks to all those who came out to celebrate the release of Issue 2 last month! Over 200 well-wishers were in attendance to enjoy a spread of free India Garden grub, cupcakes from Dozen, Starbucks coffee, and (of course) some fine fine magazines.
